WHEN UNITED HIT 9 IN A PREMIER LEAGUE GAME

rsz 9goals

On this day in 1995, it rained Manchester United goals as the Reds ruthlessly rampaged through Ipswich Town's defence to rack up a 9-0 victory - the Premier League's record win.

Only two scorelines in the club's history have eclipsed it - the 10-0 European Cup annihilation of Anderlecht in 1956 and, back in the Newton Heath days, a 10-1 triumph over Wolves in 1892.

Going into the Ipswich game, the jury was still out on Andy Cole in some quarters, even if Alex Ferguson's big-money January signing had already netted United's winner against Aston Villa and a goal in a Manchester derby success.

On 4 March, he silenced the doubters in emphatic style at Old Trafford, becoming the first man to score five times in a Premier League game as the visitors had no answer to his predatory finishing.

Roy Keane had opened the floodgates prior to Cole's first two strikes but it was only 3-0 to the Reds at half-time. That advantage was doubled by the time the hour-mark elapsed, with Mark Hughes getting in on the act with a double just after Andy completed his hat-trick.

Following Cole's fourth effort, Paul Ince found the net from a quickly taken free-kick, before United's new forward wrapped up the scoring in the 89th minute with his fifth goal of an extraordinary afternoon.
