The goalkeeper made his dream move to his boyhood favourite club, having garnered a wealth of experience at several clubs throughout his career, mainly in the Football League.

Born in Hemel Hempstead in January 1983, Lee was a youth-teamer at nearby Watford before joining Derby County, with whom he made his senior debut in the 2002/03 season.

Capped by England in various age groups up to Under-21, his club career continued, after loan spells at Burnley and Oldham Athletic, with a switch to Sheffield Wednesday in July 2007.

Other permanent moves, to Burnley in 2010 and then back to Derby County in 2013, preceded his spell in the Premier League with Stoke City.

He initially joined the Potters on loan in August 2016, as cover for the injured Jack Butland, and produced a Man-of-the-Match performance at Old Trafford two months later, as his side held United to a 1-1 draw.

In the next meeting between the teams, Grant prevented the Reds from scoring until the 93rd minute, when Wayne Rooney made club history by scoring his record 250th goal.

In January 2017, the stopper made his move to Stoke permanent and racked up 30 appearances in total in 2016/17, keeping nine clean sheets. His performances helped the Potters finish 13th in the top flight and earned him the Players’ Player of the Year award.

However, he largely acted as back-up to first-choice Butland during 2017/18, appearing just five times, as Stoke were relegated to the Championship, following 10 years in the Premier League.

Since joining the Reds on 3 July 2018, he has provided experienced cover for David De Gea and Sergio Romero.

On 25 September 2018, Grant made his United debut when he was introduced as a second-half substitute against former side Derby in a Carabao Cup third-round tie. There was more than a whiff of fate about it as Romero’s red card provided him with the opportunity and the game went to penalties. Unfortunately, the Rams edged the shoot-out but Lee took everything in his stride, as you would expect, and was actually named on the bench 14 times in his maiden campaign at Old Trafford.

He made his second first-team outing for the club in the 2-1 defeat to Astana in the Europa League in November 2019.

Despite sustaining an injury in early 2020, he signed a contract extension to prolong his stay with the Reds.
